Formula 1 was extremely dissatisfied with the comments of FIA President Mohammed bin Sulayem about the cost of commercial rights to the championship.
Ben Sulayem, commenting on information about interest in the purchase of Formula 1 on the part of the state fund of Saudi Arabia, expressed the opinion that the amount of $20 billion is overstated. The publications reported that the owners of F1 from Liberty Media in any case refused to discuss the issue of selling the racing series.
After bin Sulayem`s words appeared in the media, the legal department of Formula 1 sent an official letter to the FIA President in which Liberty expresses extreme dissatisfaction with the fact that bin Sulayem allowed himself to make public statements that directly relate to commercial issues related to Formula 1. A copy of the letter was sent to all championship prediction by hockey tips teams.
As part of the original agreement reached by former FIA President Max Mosley back in 2000 when handing over the 100-year lease rights to Formula 1, the Federation agreed not to interfere in any commercial matters related to F1. Under the terms of the agreement, the FIA must deal only with regulatory issues.
The letter argues that bin Sulayem clearly crossed a line with his comments.
The FIA has expressly committed itself not to do anything that could cause harm to owners, management or commercial rights. "We believe that these comments, made from the official account of the FIA President on social networks, violate these obligations and are completely unacceptable, " says the letter from Formula 1.
